American history is a broad topic that is usually understood through a lens of patriotic narratives, textbooks, and media. We don’t see enough mainstream debates based on critical analysis of the past. As a result, multiple surveys show that Americans have an extremely low level of historical literacy, often preferring myths over complicated, verified facts. American history myths may have been created to obscure the critical realties of the past which no one wants to bother today.
You would be surprised to know that a significant portion of the public does not truly understand the nation’s past. In this article, we’ll find out the American history facts from under the debris of baseless myths. Let’s delve in.
Major Surveys That Prove Historical Illiteracy of Americans
Below are a few surveys which unveil a painful reality how Americans lack basic knowledge of the past.
- Basic Citizenship Failure – After analyzing a particular survey, I found that, only one in every three individuals was able to clear the US Citizenship Test.
- Limited Knowledge Level – The Woodrow Wilson Foundation carried out a survey, and they found that only twenty five percent of individuals were able to answer a very basic American history question.
- Unproductive Youth – According to a survey carried out by NAEP in 2023, just thirteen percent of eighth graders were proficient enough to answer the questions on American History.
- Gaps Among College Graduates – A survey conducted by ACTA found that most of the college graduates were unable to identify the purpose of Emancipation Proclamation and tenure of a US Senator.
- Recent Data – According to a report published by ACTA, named ‘Losing America’s Memory 2.0’, only thirty one percent of students knew about James Madison, who is called the Father of US Constitution.
Common American History Myths & Hidden Truth
These misconceptions are spread across popular culture, with many of them accepted without question in society.
Myth 1 – The United States Is Founded on Religious Freedom
The Pilgrims arrived in 1620 to establish a nation based on the principles of religious freedom.
- Historical Reality – Even though the Pilgrims desired religious freedom, the real driving force behind most enterprises, especially the establishment of Jamestown colony in 1607, was financial gain. Moreover, the Massachusetts colonies showed no tolerance towards any other religion but their own.
Myth 2 – Christopher Columbus Discovered America
Columbus discovered America and brought civilization to a wild frontier.
- The Truth – Columbus never set foot on America. He arrived at the Caribbean islands, never arriving at mainland America. He enslaved the native Taíno people, established a regime of forced labor for mining gold, and publicly tortured his victims. Columbus’ arrival caused a rapid demographic decline of the locals due to violence, enslavement, and disease.
Myth 3 – Americans Achieved Independence from Foreign British Colonizers
The American Revolution was a struggle for national liberation, with native-born Americans freeing themselves from foreign occupation by a despotic ruling power, namely, the British.
- Harsh Reality – The upper-class members of the revolutionary movement, like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, were all culturally, legally, and genetically Britons.
This was essentially a civil war among British individuals that took place on stolen Indigenous lands. It was a rebellion by the rich Britons against paying taxes to fund the French and Indian War.
Myth 4 – The First Thanksgiving Was Friendly
Pilgrims and Native Americans had a friendly feast celebrating their unity.
- Fact – The Wampanoag came with ninety armed men because they had heard the sound of the Pilgrims’ gunshots and were afraid, they were going to attack them. It was an uneasy dinner with only 5 days duration. After just decades, English colonization gave rise to King Philip’s war, in which Wampanoag were annihilated; their chief’s severed head was kept up on a pole for about 20 years.
Myth 5 – American Revolution Was a David vs. Goliath Fight
Untrained American Militia won against the well-trained British Army.
Reality – Though the victory can be attributed to the valour of the Americans, it was largely due to well-trained troops from the Continental Army, strategic positioning and most importantly, the intervention of France.
Myth 6 – Betsy Ross Sewed the First Flag
Betsy Ross, who made clothing for a living, sewed the first American flag.
- Reality – This myth is not supported by historical evidence, as it was invented by Ross’s grandson nearly a century later in 1870.
Myth 7 – George Washington’s Teeth Were Made of Wood
Our first president used dentures crafted from wood.
Truth – Washington’s teeth were created from ivory, gold, lead, and real human teeth, with no wood components at all. His dentures were discolored, which resulted in this myth.
Why Do These Myths Continue to Exist?
Now, the important question is: why do these American history myths exist? Here are some of the reasons why truths are overshadowed by the myths.
- Political Manipulation – This is the major reason why real history is hidden from common people. As per 2020 Census data, hardly 2% of the US population identified as Native Americans. If painful truths of history are revealed, it could give the real owner of the land the legitimacy to reclaim their rights, which no politician wants. Consequently, they isolate the public from these harsh American history facts, preferring to see people drowned in myths.
- Patriotic Tales – In many school curricula, history is presented not as a detailed examination of past events but as a nationalistic narrative.
- Historical Education Deficit – The lack of students choosing history programs at the college level and the abandonment of required courses in history (just thirty five percent of colleges offer a mandatory history course) make the situation worse.
- The Good Old Times Illusion – Humans tend to cling to comforting illusions rather than facing harsh truths about their history.
- Media Manipulation – Historical movies and novels frequently sacrifice truth for entertainment.
To witness the raw truth of how British colonizers decimated indigenous societies, you must stay updated on the release of my new novel arriving late 2026. It’s a tale of a marginalized transgender girl who breaks free from the rigid society of mainland UK to seek refuge in the Americas.
It’s a visceral journey of courage, resilience, and survival, woven with the elements of faith, adventure, romance, and betrayal. This is a genre bending epic that challenges our understanding of the past.
Ending Note
There is a saying, “What we learnt from the history is that we never learnt from our history.”
In case of Americans, they have not even learnt their history. However, I’m so happy to know a fact that Gen Z is demanding for an Indigenous People Day instead of Columbus Day. It shows that future generations are showing an intent to correct the historical narratives fed by textbooks or political stakeholders.
It’s time to say goodbye to American history myths and embrace the harsh realities because nations with lack of historical literacy often find themselves caught in an identity crisis.
